Accelerated Reader

Danville District No. 118 Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader Program is an incentive program designed to encourage Danville Public School students in grades Kindergarten through grade eight to practice the reading skills and strategies learned in the classroom. As with the skills of playing sports or a musical instrument, students become better readers as they practice reading using appropriate materials.

AR Facts:

Students select a book of their choice from a wide variety of books available within their reading range.

After they have read the book, students then take a comprehension test about the book on the computer. The computer then scores the test and reports the student success to their classroom teacher.

Danville School District 118 has established a standard that all students in grades K-6 will read and pass a minimum of three Accelerated Reader tests each calendar month.

Volunteers Needed:

Volunteers are needed to read to students in kindergarten and the first semester of first grade. Due to the limited nature of these students reading skills, the books and tests are read to them by their families at home or by volunteers in the classroom. This oral reading of a book with the accompanying test helps to establish the habit of sitting with a book and builds listening comprehension.
